Registration Open: Ludington Regional Fishery Workshop

The annual Regional Fishery Workshop hosted by Michigan Sea Grant and partners is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2013. This year, the Ludington Workshop will focus on stocking, data collection and fish tracking tools and an updated charter fishing study report.

The workshop is free, though registration is required. There will be a $10 charge per person for lunch, payable by cash or credit at the door before the workshop begins.

WHAT:
Chinook Salmon Stocking Strategy and Tactical Plan
Last year’s workshop focused heavily on options for reducing lakewide predation on forage fish. At this year’s workshop Jay Wesley of MDNR will discuss the final lakewide plan to reduce predation and present a port-by-port overview for stocking reductions in Michigan waters.

Great Lakes Observation System (GLOS)
Dr. Jennifer Read, GLOS Executive Director, will provide an overview of this network of people, equipment and data management technology. Online buoy data and fish tracking tools will be highlighted along with upcoming additions to community-supported monitoring efforts.

2012 Great Lakes Basin Charter Fishing Study
For the third time since 1994, the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network conducted a study of charter fishing throughout the U.S. waters of the Great Lakes. A focal point of the current study was to address potential impacts of Asian carp and basin separation on the charter industry. Southwest Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator Dan O’Keefe will provide an overview of study results with emphasis on Michigan waters.
